What a day!!!!

Hello everyone,

I know many of you have been asking about me and I first want to say thank you to all of you who are supporting me through this time. I am a very lucky man to have such wonderful family and friends.

Well, let me try to explain what happened today in a little detail. Everything was going right along according to plan, I was being prepped for surgery and the anesthesiologist came to examine me. At this time he informed me that not only would I need to have a breathing tube inserted in my throat (which at pre-admission testing I was told I would not need one), but that he would have to insert it while I was AWAKE!!!!. So after several treatments of novacaine and lidocaine down my throat, I was taken into OR for insertion of the tube and the operation itself. The anesthesiologist had much trouble inserting the breating tube, and over the course of him trying to get it in properly, my oxygen levels and heart rate dropped drastically and my blood pressure shot through the roof (I do NOT have high blood pressure mind you). Once they actually did get me stabilized and the tube in my throat correctly, the surgeon decided that he was not going to perform the surgery because of the damage that may have been done during the period of time I was having those problems. He told my wife and mother that he would have to wait until I woke up completely to see if I had went into cardiac arrest or even possibly had a stroke during that time. Upon my waking, a series of tests were ran to see if I in fact had suffered any of these things.

I am happy to say that all the tests were NEGATIVE and other than a sore throat and a queasy stomach, I am just fine. I am very lucky and know that this was a sign that I was just not ready physically for this operation. I have decided that I am going to go on a diet and exercise program and lose 80 to 100 pounds before I return for the surgery. This will give me a much better chance on the table and further ensure I don't become a statistic of this operation. I will post my progress of the weight loss and further when I decide it's time to go back to the operating table again. Again, thank all of you for your support. It's means so much to me.

Darling Jimmy,
Today was a wake up call to both of us. We knew today would start a new way of life for you but we had no idea the end result would be different than what we intended at 4:06 AM (when we woke up this morning). I love you very much and I am so very thankful you are safe. I begin this new path with you and will support you 150%.

Hi Jimmy,

I was thinking about you all day today. I was so concerned when I read Catherine's updates. I am so glad to read your message. I am glad you are okay. Good luck to you on your diet. You can do it! :) Take care of yourself. Please thank Catherine for all her updates.

Good to hear you're OK, buddy. I don't understand why they had to intibate(sp?) you while you were awake. I always thought that was done while under anesthesia.

Well, anyway, glad all you have is a sore throat. Hope to see you soon.

Jimmy, you knew it wasn't going to be easy when you decided to try the surgery route, but I give you all the credit in the world for trying. Nothing wrong with going with plan "B". Glad you are OK. Keep us in Buffalo up-to-date on your progress. You're still part of our extended family. We're rooting for you!!
